July marks our Summer Reading Program. This year, the theme is “Oceans of Possibility,” and we consider the watery part of the world with selections from Frank Bullen’s Idylls of the Sea and Richard Henry Dana Jr.’s Two Years Before the Mast. Both authors – the first Britsh and the latter American – saw much of the world during careers at sea in the 19th century. Their accounts of life aboard sailing ships and literary sketches of sea fancies proved to be be popular with the public and influential on later nautical authors including Herman Melville and Joseph Conrad.
Printouts of the selections will be available for pickup at the library. Since the works of both authors are in the public domain, you can freely download and read the works in full at the following links.
