Our September 14th meeting features The Dutch House by Ann Patchett.
With a canny investment decision and a lot of luck, Cyril Conroy propels his family from poverty to immense wealth and social respect. His first order of business is to buy the eponymous Dutch House, a lavish mansion in the Philadelphia suburbs. The house is a source of pride to the Conroys, but it also sets in motion the family’s undoing. Cyril’s children, Danny and Maeve, are the narrators of the novel, exiled from the Dutch House by a hostile stepmother and resolute to return to their former wealth and status. This is a novel of hungry ambition, thwarted purpose, and the deep bound between siblings. Reading like a darkly sly and contemporary fairy tale, The Dutch House is a sprawling portrayal of family and nostalgia. (And the audiobook is narrated by Tom Hanks, which is a rare treat.)
Copies of The Dutch House will be reserved at Moffat Library between August 11th and September 15th. You can also obtain a copy on your own at the links below. Note that some titles may not be available in every format. Please feel free to reach out to firstname.lastname@example.org if you are having difficulty getting a copy.
