Our August 10th meeting features The Sympathizer by Viet Thanh Nguyen.
Looking back after more than 50 years at the complicated and painful legacy of the Vietnam War, there have been dozens of films, novels, and songs depicting and reflecting on its impacts on America. We have had rather less opportunity to consider the enormous costs of the conflict on Vietnam and the refugees and Vietnamese immigrants displaced as part of the war. The Sympathizer is a story of a double agent, a South Vietnamese army official scrambling to escape the fall of Saigon while secretly reporting to the Viet Cong. Through this tension and double identity, Nguyen has ample canvas to depict the ambivalence of the conflict and of extreme politics. As a story of the Vietnamese American experience, its often overlooked history after the war, and the contradictions of tangled identities, The Sympathizer is a uniquely written spy novel that offers an important perspective on the legacy of the Vietnam War.
Copies of The Sympathizer will be reserved at Moffat Library between July 13th and August 10th. You can also obtain a copy on your own at the links below. Note that some titles may not be available in every format. Please feel free to reach out to email@example.com if you are having difficulty getting a copy.
This program will be run virtually via Zoom. A link with instructions on accessing the meeting will be e-mailed to registrants the day before the program. Again, if you encounter any difficulty or have any questions, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org!
