The Great Beginnings Book Club meets the first and third Tuesday of every month at 7:30 pm.
While our meeting room is closed, we are holding virtual meetings via Zoom. Don’t worry if meetings are too frequent for you to finish each book; we would be thrilled to see you at whatever meetings work for your schedule. Book selections are posted at least several weeks in advance to give you a chance to focus on specific selections.
Moderated by John Donaldson.
New members are always welcome!
Our April 6th meeting features The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz.
This novel won the Pulitzer Prize in 2008 for its genuine warmth, dazzling energy, humor, and insight into the Dominican-American experience and a portrayal of the human capacity to preserve in the face of overwhelming heartbreak and loss. Oscar is a sweet but overweight and lovesick Dominican ghetto nerd. His dream alternates between becoming the Dominican J.R.R. Tolkien and finding love before, he fears, he too succumbs to the generations-long curse of misfortune and tragedy that has haunted his family through the turmoil and upheaval of the Dominican Republic in the 20th century.
Copies of The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao will be reserved at Moffat Library between March 9th and April 6th. You can also obtain a copy on your own at the links below. Note that some titles may not be available in every format. Please feel free to reach out to moffat@rcls.org if you are having difficulty getting a copy.
This program will be run virtually via Zoom. A link with instructions on accessing the meeting will be e-mailed to registrants the day before the program. Again, if you encounter any difficulty or have any questions, please contact us at moffat@rcls.org!
